Carpenter Camponotus Large 6" Formicarium Nest w/Habitat

Large Nest for Large Ants!
Carpenter (Camponotus) ants suggested for this unit but medium sized will work also. Not suitable for small ants due to the expansion barriers.
This listing for the Nest & Habitat

With our current workload we will require up to 7 days prior to shipping

For those needing larger pathways and pods this nest is made especially for you.
Expansion areas are designed for a starting colony to thrive in a small area so you can slide out partitions to increase the size as the colony grows and requires it. (plugs are included to block up the holes)
(please note some of the pictures show the nest without the acrylic top due to light glare and reflection)

This formicarium is designed to grow as your colony grows.
Start off with just the main compartment until your colony grows. Slide out the partition without any disruption to the colony to access either the whole left side or the lower right portion. Then as they grow even more open the third compartment for the full nest access.(plugs included to seal up the outer nest walls as partitions removed)

All nests when fully assembled measure about 6" square and a little over 1.5" high

Each nest kit comes complete with the following:

Base & Drawer - This area houses the lower entrance to the nest as well as a sliding drawer to place your cotton balls or whatever you like giving you full control over the the humidity levels of the nest.
Expandable Nest with slide out partitions and plugs
Lid - to give the ants privacy and darkness they prefer
Clear Acrylic top
Triple Reinforced Mesh Bottom - Not just a single or double but TRIPLE protection from escapes and cotton pulling from below. Allows the humidity to flow freely into the nest.
Caps - 2 caps come with the nest for each entrance in case you want to close everything off.
"Queen" Adapter & Test Tube- This adapter attaches to the upper entrance so the new queen can have her test tube home attached and can enter the nest when ready. It also doubles as a
water supply for the colony after the queen is released into the nest.
Heating Module - allows the use of a pass through cable heating system

The Habitat (Outer-World) measures 10.5" x 4" x 6.25" (267mm x 101mm x 159mm)

Tubing from Nest
Connector (underside)
Expansion Connector (rear 2 way for later expansion)
Lid - Double reinforced fine mesh screen for good escape proof ventilation
Lock down feature - We added an extra "lock down" option for extra protection of escape prone ants
Stand - Tubing will enter the front of the stand from the nest, connects underneath and tubes up into the Habitat

Both entrances to the formicarium are sized to fit the standard 1/2" outer diameter tubing most commonly used in the hobby. Also the test tube is of common size also used by others in the hobby.

We are constantly upgrading and tweaking our designs as we discover new ideas to make them better. Some of those ideas have come from our customers as well. Sometimes our pictures do not reflect these little changes but none of them will alter the design of the nest in any major way so what you see in the pictures is still very close to what you will receive.

Sometimes the colors may vary slightly due to a few things like camera, lighting, internet browsers, monitor display of color and sometimes our supply of materials can change shades and hues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do these come with or do you sell ants?

No we do not include or sell ants. It is illegal in the USA to transport or ship a queen ant across state lines. Since our units are designed for a colony with a queen we are unable to offer this service. (more info on how to get one below)

Are these Ant Farms like at the pet or Hobby Store?

While these are sometimes called ant farms there is a large difference. Most Ant Farms offer a “mail in option” for ants to purchase. These are usually Harvester Worker Ants that will die off fairly quickly and lack the “colony” aspect due to not having a Queen. While our units can also house these kinds of ants and some people get them as a “starter” option, our units offer the ability to start from a single queen ant that has just started her colony. Also our nesting areas are completely pre-formed and ready for the ants to make their home.

Where can I order a Queen Ant?

It is illegal to ship a Queen Ant across State lines in the USA. There are two options to acquire one. You can catch one around your yard or community during the right time of year based on the type of ant or you can locate an ant farmer within your state and purchase a ready to go colony. There is a project that was started from the people over at Ants Canada called the GAN Project (Global Ant Nursery). They have a directory listed by country and state/province.

How do I go about catching my own queen ant?

All through the spring and summer months multiple queen ants are released from exisiting ant mounds/colonies. Start off by researching what type of ants and when these “nuptial” flights will take place in your region as it really does vary a lot from species and region. I HIGHLY suggest watching these 2 videos in order for further information:
These are excellent guides on how to catch and setup the initial home for the queen.

How long will it take to ship out once I place an order?

Currently we are requiring up to 7 days depending on our current workload.

Once I receive my Order how will I know how to set it up?

We include access to a complete easy to follow picture guide with every order so you can have your unit setup in no time.

HELP! The sponge connected to my water tube is leaking into the formicarium! What do I do?

Sometimes the sponge can have a kink in it. Try removing and resetting the sponge a few times first. If this does not help then use the other sponge we supplied in the decoration package. If it is still leaking please contact us right away.

HELP! How do the ants get from one nest into the other? (expandable units)

There is a small “pin” located in the front corner on top of the nests where they connect in the two expandable all in one units. Once you pull that pin out it exposes three holes to allow access to the 2nd side.

On the expandable stand a lone nest designs the partitions are removed and replaced with the included plugs.

They are designed this way so you can start off with a small colony in a smaller space which is more suitable. Once the colony grows and requires more room you pull the pin out. Some people will place a small pebble or twig over the top hole where the pin was removed to make it look better and not create a new entrance.
